About me

I am a person who has taken pictures his whole life, but one loathed to call himself "a photographer". There's just too much baggage with that title. Photographers are folks busy making art. A person taking a picture is satisfying some inner need and thinks of art with a particular contempt. I might have tried to be artistic and it all feels too disingenuous, so picture-taking it is.

I started like most of us do: taking pictures with cheap things. Phones, Instamatics, Polaroids--it doesn't really matter. Naturally, as we grow in sophistication, our equipment grows in both cost and complexity. Ultimately, it all gets in the way and in order to make good pictures, we need to remind ourselves of the basics. Simplicity reigns and we find satisfaction.

Hypocritically, I have nice photography equipment and a darkroom with a computerized enlarger and the latest version of Photoshop and Lightroom, and use all of these tools to make pictures. However, my approach is as basic as can be: walk around and take pictures of cool stuff. There's no planning, renting, modeling, or the like. Just snapshots for fun. I supposed this is the luxury of the non-professional: I don't NEED to be a photographer.
